Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 100 BCE to 300 CE. A rare stylized frog effigy carved from mottled emerald-green stone with dark-brown inclusions. The amphibious animal exhibits a rotund body resting atop four bent legs, incised ovoid eyes, a crested nose, and wide lips. Frogs were important symbols of fertility and rebirth across the ancient Americas and were important animals associated with rain and the sustenance that it brings. Size: 3" L x 2.2" W x 1.55" H (7.6 cm x 5.6 cm x 3.9 cm).
