Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mixtec, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A shallow polychrome terracotta dish, elaborately decorated with stylized geometric motifs in orange, red, yellow, black, and while, with a central depiction of a head in profile, perhaps belonging to a reptilian serpent. This central head presents long snout with open jaws revealing pointy fangs. A rare iconographic form. Beautiful Mixtec stylings. Size: ~7" in diameter. Provenance: Ex-private R. Pearson collection, Denver, CO, acquired from Riverbend Gallery, Georgia; ex-private New York collection.
