Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mixtec culture, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. An incredibly rare lidded jar that is hand-carved from translucent, smoky-gray obsidian. The spherical body exhibits a gently rounded but stable base, a thick, flared rim, and a deep interior basin while the bell-shaped lid is surmounted by a tiered, beehive-shaped handle. Obsidian held deep symbolism for the Mixtec people due to its association with their religious rituals, craftsmanship, and military power. It was used in religious ceremonies and as a material for finely crafted artifacts, symbolizing spiritual and artistic importance. Additionally, obsidian's role in weapon-making and trade underscored its significance in warfare and economic exchanges, contributing to the Mixtec culture and identity. Size (w/ lid): 2.5" Diameter x 4.125" H (6.4 cm x 10.5 cm)
