Description:

Pre-Columbian, south-central Mexico and Guatemala, Olmec culture, ca. 12th to 9th century BCE. A very unusual terracotta figure, miniature in scale and rotund in form, standing with outspread legs, a prominent belly with delineated navel, and applied loin cloth. With his arms bent at the elbows and jutting behind his body, the figure places his hands on his hips and looks upward, perhaps appealing to the deities of the celestial realm. The loop behind his head serves for suspension or in this case attachment to a custom stand. Size: 2.125" H (5.4 cm); 3.125" H (7.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
