Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 500 CE. Rare and wonderful stone amulet or bead of a bird. Carved of sodalite, one of the primary minerals found in lapis lazuli, it depicts a bird with its head resting upon its back, eyes drilled, feathers string cut and suspension holes also drilled. This was probably once part of a larger strand of sodalite that would have adorned a very important member of the clan. Size: 1.5" L x .75" H (3.8 cm x 1.9 cm)

Provenance: private Richards collection, Florida, USA, purchased in 2005 from Malter family, California, USA, acquired via family descent
