Starts at $350 A Pre-Columbian figure from the ancient Michoacan region of West Mexico, circa 200 B.C. - 200 A.D. Measures approximately 6 1/2" tall by about 5 1/4" wide. This figure depicts a compelling kneeling figure, arms stretched outward, looking upward as if making a plea to a deity or unseen forces. Horned figures such as this one are widely believed to represent shamans, who were intermediaries between the sacred and profane realms. The abstract, restrained features of this figure make it a particularly appealing and interesting example of the type. Provenance: From a CA, USA collection. Before that, reportedly from the collection of Dr. G. Solem, former curator of invertebrates at the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago. - Condition: Only minor loss, chipping, abrasions, with weathering and wear from hundreds of years of burial and exposure to the elements. Ancient erosion and loss to the front of the front of the figure's right knee. Both horns have been repaired, simply re-glued at fine breaklines that remain visible. Possible restoration to the tip of the figure's right horn. Loss to much of the original white slip decoration. Ample mineral and sediment deposits, with root marks etched into the surface of some areas of the slip.
