Description:

Ancient Near East, Persian Gulf area, Mesopotamia, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A fascinating limestone amulet depicting an anthropomorphic head with a pointed hat and flared coiffure that give it a fishtail form. Shown in profile, the stylized countenance presents a high forehead, a flattened nose, petite eyes, an open mouth, and a full beard, all supported by a thick neck. A drill hole perforates the side of the head, where the ear would be, allowing the amulet to be suspended and worn as a pendant. Size: 0.6" W x 1.2" H (1.5 cm x 3 cm)

Provenance: private Middletown, New York, USA collection; ex-Bonhams & Brooks, London, United Kingdom, November 8th, 2001, lot number 173
