Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, ca. 3200 to 1900 BCE. A large terracotta votive figure depicting a mother goddess, an ancient protector deity for mothers and mothers-to-be. Painted in hues of cream and earth, she is seen standing with one hand holding the front skirt of a flowing robe and her other arm, bent at the elbow, is shown grasping a small pottery vessel. She also features large breasts, wide shoulders, hollow ovular eyes, a bulbous nose, full lips, and large bunches of hair hanging above her neckline. Pottery figures like this were created either as a devotional object, a votive offering, or as a personal overseer in the home. Custom museum-quality stand included. Size: 2.125" L x 2.375" W x 6" H (5.4 cm x 6 cm x 15.2 cm); 6.625" H (16.8 cm) on stand.
