Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan territories, ca. 550 to 950 CE. A large and exceptional pottery incensario used in ceremonies to communicate with the heavens, meticulously handbuilt to depict a shaman transforming into an eagle with cacao pods emerging from its face and mesmerizing details - those boldly delineated circular eyes, looking downward; a slightly open beak with a curved, pointy protrusion at the front; an intricately carved and modeled stylized human nose above; elongated human ears adorned with round ornaments; avian feathers lining his head and neckline, and a separate crested top - the entire vessel with perforations for the fragrant burned incense to waft through to the surroundings. A marvelous piece with traces of blue and white pigment remains as well! Size: 6.875" W x 8.625" H (17.5 cm x 21.9 cm)
