Description:

Pre-Columbian, Jaina / Campeche Mexico, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 600 to 850 CE. A delightful musical instrument in the form of a standing male with crossed arms, probably a ballplayer, with a double whistle - blow/sound holes just above his feet and hips and on the underside of the raised circular base. He wears a complex headdress and/or coiffure with nice remaining blue pigment, a large yoke, and a rope-like necklace - with little else aside from round ear spools (also with blue pigment). Figures like this one, found on an island off the Yucatan peninsula, are noted for their lifelike faces and their immense detail. The accoutrements and clothing this figure wears most likely were modeled after actual articles worn by an individual of the Late Classic Maya period. Figures like this example were generally produced in Campeche and brought to Jaina Island to be buried with the dead. Size: 6.25" H (15.9 cm)
