Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Gulf Coast region, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A well-preserved head pendant that is hand-carved from mottled greenstone with sandy gray inclusions. The sizable effigy is rendered with a prominent nose between teardrop-shaped eyes, a raised upper lip that reveals the upper row of teeth, and tab-shaped ears. Interestingly, the inward-curving spirals of the headdress show clear Veracruz influences as they are more commonly seen on Veracruz sonriente sculptures. Two pairs of biconically drilled suspension holes along the verso enabled this pendant to be worn around one's neck regardless of if they were living or deceased. Size: 2.5" W x 3.5" H (6.4 cm x 8.9 cm)
