North Africa, South Morocco, Ktaoua Formation, Ordovician era, ca. 449 to 443.7 million years ago. A remarkable stone matrix containing extinct carpoid fossils, in the Dendrocystites genus from the prehistoric Ordovician period. Carpoids, also known as "armored acorn worms," are a group of extinct marine invertebrates - they had a saclike body structure and a protective exoskeleton composed of small plates. The detail is remarkable with plainly visible ossicles even on the bodies of the carpoids. There are 6 complete and partial carpoids with four being whole with complete anatomy in view. It is very rare it is to find multiple caproid fossils in such a state of preservation, and naturally grouped together - none have been added or inlaid in the stone matrix! This specimen is a perfect addition for collectors of the finest grade of diverse prehistoric fauna, and the surrounding rock itself shows beautiful layering and original sedimentary flow lines. Size of stone matrix: 10" L x 8.25" W (25.4 cm x 21 cm); fossils: 4" to 4.25" L ( 10.2 cm to 10.8 cm)
