Description:

Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A rare cast-bronze axe head of sturdy form featuring a cylindrical socketing shaft adorned with 2 abstract zoomorphic creatures. The first animal, perhaps an ibex, bears a pair of nubbin horns and is being chased or hunted by the wide-mouthed creature in the back, perhaps a panther or lion. The weapon itself exhibits a stocky vertical blade with flared tips, and the entire composition is covered with layers of naturally-occurring patina in hues of green, brown, and russet. Size: 3.7" L x 1.1" W x 2.4" H (9.4 cm x 2.8 cm x 6.1 cm)
