Description:

Near East / Western Asia, Parthia, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A striking, wheel-made ceramic vase of a classic amphora form with three strap-like handles, an elongated body, and a narrow mouth that flares outward into a rolled-down rim. Thick, deep green-blue glaze coats most of the surface, aside from a narrow strip around the base. The glaze has attained an incredible patina with age, including areas of rainbow iridescence, with craquelure. Vessels like this one seem to have been inspired by Chinese pottery that Parthian artisans would have seen traveling on the Silk Roads - both overland and maritime. They also traveled the Silk Road, and have been found in India, Sri Lanka, and other areas that traded with this region. Glazed wares like this one are likely from northern Parthia. Size: 8.45" W x 17.9" H (21.5 cm x 45.5 cm)
