Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A mottled red and black obsidian blade, knapped to have edges that are still cuttingly sharp. Obsidian was revered by ancient Mesoamericans as being some of the finest and sharpest material available. Red obsidian is particularly rare, thought to have only come from two volcanic sources in nearby Jalisco. Size: 3.25" W x 6.45" H (8.3 cm x 16.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired from Goldberg Auctions, Los Angeles, California, USA in 1968
