Description:

Near East / Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 8th century CE. A handsome, lifesize, carved alabaster fish, perhaps once part of a large sculpture, with a long body, low fins, and dramatic overbite. Incised details create the mouth, eye, and fins. The symbolism of the fish would have been obvious to the devoutly Christian Byzantines. Size: 12.5" W x 4.2" H (31.8 cm x 10.7 cm)
