Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A cast leaded-copper alloy vase in the form of an instrument known as a sho, a mouth organ, with fierce warriors on both sides. The bamboo pipes descend in height along the rim opening to symbolize phoenix wings, and a button like protrusion on one side represents the mouthpiece. The base is mounted on a sturdy openwork pedestal. The exaggerated features of both figures indicate masks, the figure with a dragon atop his head is the semi-mythic King Rangryo, who donned a frightening mask in battle to intimidate his enemies. The sho accompanied bugaku dancers, who often performed King Rangryo's martial dance. Size: 3.25" L x 3.25" W x 12" H (8.3 cm x 8.3 cm x 30.5 cm)
