Description:

Ancient East Asia, Japan, Jomon period, ca. 2000 to 300 BCE. A sizable jar formed from terracotta with a rounded base, a spherical body, a deep basin, and a squat, flared rim. The exterior was first smoothed and then given a textured surface with an applied rope or cord - "Jomon" translates as "corded pattern" in Japanese. Jomon pottery is some of the oldest ever made, and this is a rare example of such early artistry. Size: 6.75" W x 5.25" H (17.1 cm x 13.3 cm).
