Description:

Southern Arabia, around modern day Yemen, Sabaean people, ca. late 1st millennium BCE to early 1st millennium CE. An incredibly rare basalt stone altar of circular form standing on three tapered legs. Upper rim scalloped with small spout used to allow the flow of blood or other liquids. If this was designed for sacrifices, it must have been for very small animals. Along the outer edge and outside of each leg are inscriptions in ancient text - not translated but certainly possible. Size: 8.375" W x 3.75" H (21.3 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Richard Wagner collection, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, acquired in the 1970s
