Description:

South Asia, India / Pakistan, Indus Valley civilization, Harappa, ca. 2500 to 2000 BCE. A fascinating ceramic figure with a distinctive face and huge conical headdress. The figure stands with arms extended, large cups with flaring rims held in each hand. The figure's legs are wide, drawn together, and terminate in wide, flipper-like feet. The chest is decorated with lightly depressed circles - perhaps representing a necklace. The face is classically Harappan, with round eyes pierced through their centers and a bird-like nose. Incised lines on the headdress and waist create further detail. Size: 3.8" W x 5.1" H (9.7 cm x 13 cm)

See an Indus Valley figure with a very similar sculptural style at the Brooklyn Museum (37.94 ).
