Description:

Ancient Art. Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. An incredible bronze stirrup, of twisted form, terminating in two zoomorphic, cobra-like hooks. Incised details - lines and stipple marks - create a scale-like texture on the body of the snake. Ancient Iran was a culture rich in dramatic bronze creations. A class of nomadic horse lords and ladies commissioned bronze items from artisans in urban centers. Cast in a single piece using the lost wax casting technique, this item and others showcasing the work of these bronzesmiths ultimately came to grace the graves of elite warriors. Size: 5.05" W x 5" H (12.8 cm x 12.7 cm); 7.8" H (19.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private R. D. collection, Long Beach, California, USA collection, acquired over twenty five years from various major galleries
