Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Inca, ca. 1500 CE. This is a rare ceremonial sling, that features a central section comprised of nine abstract anthropomorphic figures woven in contrasting chocolate brown and a tawny sienna. Most slings had a long and thin cradle with a long slit for placing the projectile stone or lead sling bullet. This example lacks a slit and was non-functional as true weaponry. Instead it was most likely used in ceremonial rituals. Even today, ceremonial slings are used in parts of the Andes as accessories in dances and in mock battles. The ancient Inca made their slings our of llama wool. They relished contrasting dark and light pigments and mastered painstaking braiding techniques. Nicely mounted against an olive green linen. ~86"
