Description:

Pre-Columbian, Aztec Empire, Mexico, ca. 1500 CE. High karat gold circular form depicting a running warrior; in his center he's holding a large shield-like disk from which sashes emit on left and right side. He's wearing leg ornaments and a headdress with a feather train over his back. Of note: Not much gold of the Aztec Empire has come down to us, as the Spanish Conquistadores melted it all down; in fact, the only gold that did survive ended up in the Vienna Museum, the Medicci Collection, in Florence and in the Vatican Museum. 3"D. Custom stand. Traces of original red pigment. Provenance: Ex-Hirsch Collection, Germany.
