Western Europe, Spain / Portugal, Iberian, Celtic culture, ca. 3rd to 2nd century BCE. A stippled wave motif gilt in a 21.7% gold adorns the rim of this stunning 89.65% silver Celtiberian goblet! The foot is further accented with an engraved elliptical or leaf pattern. The term Celtiberian refers to groups of peoples in what is now Spain and Portugal who lived in the pre-Roman era that had cultural similarities to the Central European Celtic, Hallstatt, and La Tene culture. Silver and copper deposits in the Sierra Morena mountains provided the skilled metalworkers the means to create such elegant works such as this piece!
