Description:

Ancient Art. Near East, Holyland (Canaan / Levant), Iron Age, ca. 8th to 5th century BCE. A tall and unusually-shaped ceramic oil lamp. The bowl of the lamp is wide, with a flat rim with incised lines running around it; in the center is a small area for lighting a flame, with narrow openings to allow oil to flow into it as it burns. The bowl of the lamp slopes downward to assist the flow of the oil. The bowl stands on an integrated cylindrical leg that flares outward into a flanged, hollow foot. This item is much rarer than the later Holy Land oil lamps, which imitated the Greek closed-over style. Size: 5.45" W x 5.5" H (13.8 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000
