Description:

Hittite Empire, Middle Bronze Age, ca. 1600 to 1180 BCE. This is a copper axe headwith a flared end and a dark patina. Axe heads like this were often the product of patronage from Hittite rulers. They would have been made to be used in temples as stand ins for a god; for example, in the Middle Bronze Age, there is written evidence that legal judgments were passed before a bronze dagger associated with a god, and artwork from this period also shows swords being worshipped as gods. Size: 5.3" L x 1.8" W (13.5 cm x 4.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Private J. Piscopo Collection, ex Arte Primitivo
