Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 600 to 100 BCE. An extremely rare example of a star-gazer from the Mezcala culture, skillfully rendered in mottled greenstone. The kneeling figure faces forward with arms draped down the sides from angular shoulders, the legs with string-cut groove extending in front and beneath the body. The ovoid face peers up with slit-form eyes and displays a slightly slanted nose, rigid brows, parted lips, and raised cheek bones, and a biconically-drilled suspension hole is situated atop the dramatically hunched back. Size: 2.625" L x 2" W x 3.5" H (6.7 cm x 5.1 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010; ex-collection of Gertrude Stein (d. 1946), Baltimore, Maryland and Paris, France
