Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, ca. 4th century BCE. A gorgeous blackware guttus, this unusual form with an extended trumpeted spout, a looped strap handle, and a voluminous body standing upon a raised extended pedestal foot. The high relief roundel is decorated with a mask that likely depicts a deity, perhaps the legendary Medusa, the Gorgon winged female with a serpent coiffure whose face turned gazers to stone. This type of vessel was used to hold precious oils. The looped handle and the fact that there is only one opening gave the user precise control over the amount of liquid poured. A lovely and rare example! Size: 4.75" W x 3.5" H (12.1 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex-prominent LA County, USA collector who acquired these prior to 2000
