Description:

Greece, probably Hellenistic, ca. 300 BCE. A smooth, rounded, and highly polished 94.7% silver mirror with concentric rings incised on the center and border of the concave side, a near-flat convex side, and a flared lip. Two triangular shapes are carved between the lip and the outer-most incised ring, suggestive of the work of an apprentice or that they were added long after the mirror's creation. Greek women in redware art are often depicted looking at themselves in round mirrors, and mirrors like this one are often found in the graves of higher status Greek women. Mirrors may have also played a religious role, being used in divining rituals or as votive offerings. Size: 4.8" (12.2 cm) in diameter; Silver quality: 94.7%; Weight: 90.3 grams
