Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec culture, ca. 1150 to 550 BCE. A beautiful amulet depicting an abstract simian figure, hand-carved from sumptuous blue-green jadeite. The monkey stands atop a single fused leg, holds attenuated arms atop the narrow chest, and has a drilled suspension hole centered on the curled tip of the raised tail. The minimalist countenance of the animal boasts petite eyes, a broad nose, thin lips and puffy cheeks. Faint traces of red cinnabar are visible within many incised details and provide a chromatic complementarity to the aqua-hued jade. Size: 0.25" W x 1.9" H (0.6 cm x 4.8 cm).
