Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Magdalena River basin, Tolima, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. An intriguing bichrome terracotta, hollow-molded figural whistle, rendered in a characteristically schematized style, standing absolutely straight with broad shoulders, arms bent at the sides, and hands placed to the abdomen. The figure presents a focused visage with a white face presenting slit eyes, a protruding nose, and a slit mouth. This is framed by red ears or ear ornaments and a caplike coiffure. Further adorning the figure are a modeled and incised 'beaded' necklace, bangle bracelets, and anklets. In addition, the buttocks and navel are clearly delineated. Sound through elbows and feet; blow hole at top of head. Size: 2.5" W x 3.5" H (6.4 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-Merrin Gallery, New York, New York, USA; ex-private Mrs. Torro collection, acquired in the 1970s
