Description:

Japan, Heian Dynasty, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. Very rare ceramic pyxis in a glaze that is somewhat reminiscent to those used by the Chinese at this time period in the production of Hare's Fur vessels. Tall circular vessel with deep dripped glaze in shades of brown and tan, with ivory lid which was covered in gold foil on the interior. We believe the lid is a later addition probably from the Edo period. A very lovely vessel! Size: 1.875" W x 4" H (4.8 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Sarkisian Gallery, Denver, CO, acquired in the 1950's. On display at the Denver Art Museum in the 1960's.
