Description:

Ancient Egypt, Ptolemaic Period, ca. 332 to 30 BCE. A petite, hand-carved bone figurine depicting a nude female concubine standing with delineated legs atop an integral rectangular plinth. She presents her feminine form with both arms to her sides and a high, beehive-style coiffure atop her tapered face. Faint traces of red pigment on the face and arms indicate this was vibrantly decorated at one time. Concubine figures like this example were typically buried with men in ancient Egypt as it was believed to ensure the man's fertility and sexual pleasure in the afterlife. Size: 0.28" L x 0.79" W x 3.07" H (0.7 cm x 2 cm x 7.8 cm)

Cf. The Walters Art Museum, accession number 71.521.
