Description:

Classical Antiquities. Egypt, Ptolemaic Period, ca. late 4th to 3rd century CE. Very rare glass frit head of the god Bes. Bes was the dwarf deity with grotesque and gruesome face which was supposed to ward off all dangerous creatures. His beard and lion's ears add to his un-Egyptian and therefore fearsome looks. Made of a ceramic composition baked at extremely high temperatures in a special fusing oven, which once clenched formed a glass surface. Size: 1.875" W x 1.75" H (4.8 cm x 4.4 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand.
