Description:

Ancient Egypt, New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, ca. 1549 to 1292 BCE. A fabulous cup of a petite size formed from paste glass (known as frit) of a stunning cobalt-blue hue. The vessel has a lightly rounded but stable base, squat walls, and a thick rim surrounding a shallow basin. Once pulled from the kiln, the surface would have exhibited a reflective glassy surface. More elaborate examples of this form were decorated with a variety of foliate, geometric, anthropomorphic, and fish-form motifs in black pigment, making them easily visible against the blue-colored ground. Size: 2.6" Diameter (6.6 cm).

For a stylistically-similar example with added black pigment, please see: Florence Dunn Friedman, ed. "Gifts of the Nile: Ancient Egyptian Faience." Thames and Hudson in association with The Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, 1998, p. 112, figs. 76-77.
