Description:

Native American, US Southwest, Hopi peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. An incredibly rare hand-carved ungulate bone kachina with a leather skirt and a belt made of clay, stone, and shell beads. The kachina represented here is Mudhead, a clown figure seen in most Hopi ceremonies, known for drumming, dancing, and playing games with the audience. Kachina figures are meant as gifts for children representing kachina dancers and the supernatural katsinam beings they embody, and are part of the Pueblo tradition, which includes the Hopi and the Zuni tribes. Size: 3.3" W x 4.95" H (8.4 cm x 12.6 cm); 5.25" H (13.3 cm) on included custom stand.
