Description:

Pre-Columbian, Chile, Elqui Province, ca. 950 to 1450 CE. A handbuilt polychrome ceramic serving bowl used for ceremonial rituals by the Daquita culture which flourished in Chile and Argentina before succumbing to the Inca Empire in the 1400s. The Diaguita peoples were accomplished potters as this finely built form displays. A gorgeous piece handpainted in hues of russet red and chocolate brown on a white ground. Note the meticulously painted abstract geometric motifs adorning the walls of this piece, not to mention that fabulously expressive animorphic visage with its protruding toothy snout, dotted skin, and round beady eyes. What character and so rare! Size: 7.125" in diameter x 4.75" H (18.1 cm x 12.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex - R. Gill collection acquired at David Bernstein Gallery, NYC
