Description:

Ancient Seas, Morocco, Devonian Period, ca. 416 to 358.2 million years ago. A fossilized Burmeisterella trilobite upon a stone matrix with great preparation; the body almost entirely excavated from the sandstone matrix and slightly raised above with the cephalon and thorax almost completely free. Trilobites, meaning three lobed, have three major sections from which their name is derived; the cephalon that contains the sensory organs such as eyes and antennae, the thorax with the articulating plates, and the pygidium, or tail area. The pronounced tail spine on Burmeisterella, known as a telson, is similar to what modern day horseshoe crabs have to help them steer while swimming. Size: 7" L x 5" W x 3.75" H (17.8 cm x 12.7 cm x 9.5 cm)

  • Condition: Professionally excavated and prepared, with areas of repair and restoration. Restoration with new material to the genal spines to the side of the head. Losses to surface layers on the thorax, with overpainting to the surface. Rare specimen, a nice example! The stone matrix base is mounted in a simple Tupperware container via metal bolts to protect the fossil during shipping and storage. The bolts are removable and trilobite can be removed from the container (carefully!).
