Description:

Ancient Greece, Cypriot Archaic, Iron Age, ca. 7th to 6th century BCE. A hand-built, modeled, and painted chariot group, with back-to-back figures, the figure with hands held in front is the driver of the chariot box and the figure behind holding a shield is a warrior. This figural group is entirely hand-made; unlike other examples, no areas are mold-made. The figures wear coil-formed applied caps or headbands and disc earrings, have black painted eyes and beards, and long locks of hair falling below their ears. Some red pigment remains adorn the driver's right wrist. There are also traces of white slip on the chariot box and figures. Though a fragment with no surviving horses, this is a rare example of visual culture from this very early culture. Chariot (quadriga) models like this example were common offerings in Cypro-Archaic sanctuaries. Size: 3.125" W x 5.875" H (7.9 cm x 14.9 cm)
