Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Diquis region, Chiriqui, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A delightful pottery jar sitting upon a round yet stable base with a wide hip, a sloped shoulder, and an inward-curving rim above a deep basin. Enveloped in a light orange slip, the exterior of the vessel is adorned with black and red pigments depicting a zoomorphic creature resembling a frog that squats atop the jar. The fascinating animal presents bowed legs that terminate in lengthy toes or claws, target motif eyes, and a projecting snout that doubles as a handle. Its annular body surrounds the vessel's rim, as a pair of risen lugs extend opposite the snout. A dotted design with petaloid motifs surrounds the amphibian, while a pair of horizontal bands encompasses the jar's wide hip. Size: 9.9" Diameter x 5.8" H (25.1 cm x 14.7 cm)
