Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Middle Cauca region, Middle Cauca Complex, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. An enigmatic, seated female figure with a round head that towers over her relatively smaller body and thin limbs. She has her legs crossed in front of her and her hands - bent at the wrist to give them a foot-like appearance - rest on her knees. She has small, pronounced breasts and a distended belly button that may be indicative of pregnancy. Using red-on-cream resist and paint, the artist has made only her face, hands, and lower body pale. Similar examples of this type of figure have goemetric patterns painted in black on the surface, which this example may once have had. Her face is solemn, with small, coffee-bean-shaped eyes and mouth and a prominent, well-sculpted nose. Three tiny perforations on each ear and through her nose may once have had gold jewelry, as similar figures from the region have. Size: 3" L x 3.75" W x 7.6" H (7.6 cm x 9.5 cm x 19.3 cm)
