Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A wonderful and incredibly rare hand-carved stone effigy of a lizard. The crouching reptile is formed from a dark green stone with a mottled surface that makes for a slightly scaly appearance. The lizard rests on his four legs that are bent and close to his body. The slender tail curls around to his side. His head is delightfully simplistic with incised round eyes, nostrils, shallow grooves for his mouth, and a pointed snout. The surface is delightfully tactile and smooth from hours of pecking and polishing the surface. This charming lizard is captivating and may have been a protective effigy for the deceased. Size: 7.5" L x 3.375" W x 1" H (19 cm x 8.6 cm x 2.5 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
