Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An unusual mace head carved from a gorgeous red stone of beautiful wine-colored hues, in the form of a crouching human or perhaps simian figure, its extended head delineated with depressed round eyes, inclined facial planes that rise at the center to form a straight, protruding nose, an open, ovoid mouth, and flat ear-like forms that almost suggest this creature is a monkey. The figure bends to a deep bow or crouching pose with limbs delineated so as to represent bent knees and elbows. A perforation through the backside was created so that this figural work would serve as a ceremonial mace head. A rare example from this West Mexican shaft-tomb culture. Size: 4.125" L x 2.375" W x 3.25" H (10.5 cm x 6 cm x 8.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Arnovick collection
