Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A heavy piece of basalt that has been carved into a standing, grinning jaguar. The teeth are hugely emphasized, with four careful and sharp canines; the eyes are deep set and the nose emphasized. There are also details of paws and a long, thin tail. Jaguar imagery was some of the most powerful pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, linked to ideas of power, kingship, and gods. Size: 4.6" L x 2.45" W x 3" H (11.7 cm x 6.2 cm x 7.6 cm)
