Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A wide and deep pottery bowl of squat form accompanied by a rare vessel lid. Both the lid and the body display a beige-hued ground color, the lid being densely decorated with a fantastical scene of abstract zoomorphic creatures, perhaps marine in origin, with serpentine bodies and geometric heads with rather charming faces; around the vessel body is an abstract curvilinear bands. The use of purple pigment in conjunction with the black and red paint is of classic Macaracas style. Size (w/ lid): 10.38" Diameter x 5.3" H (26.4 cm x 13.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-private USA collection, acquired before 2000. Complete provenance will be provided to winning bidder; all items from this collection have been appraised by Marianne Huber in 2014

  • Condition: Lid is repaired and restoration from several pieces, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines; vessel body is intact. Abrasions and fading to original pigment in scattered areas. Nice preservation to motifs.
