Description:

Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Chupicuaro culture, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery group scene comprised of a flat base, rolled sides, a planar top, and a trio of seated figures. The legs of each figure appear to be covered by a large communal blanket with a red-painted, three-pronged triangle in the center which denotes each figure's respective seating area. Their arms and hands are outstretched and meet the hands of the neighboring figures. This artifact may not be showing a family gathering but perhaps something of shamanic importance. Each figure, with his coffee-bean-shaped eyes, broad noses, upraised heads, and simple headbands, appears to be partaking in a prayer session or maybe a group-oriented trance to reach out to the world of the spirits. Size: 2.875" W x 1.375" H (7.3 cm x 3.5 cm).
