East Asia, China, Song Dynasty, ca. 960 to 1270 CE. A skillfully-detailed terracotta depiction of a recumbent boar, its four legs underneath in a comfortable position, and a sinuous tail with a bushy tip curled around its hind quarters. Certain details such as pinned-back ears, snout wrinkles, tail, and body hair are all painted in an earthtone brown pigment, all atop a delicate and reflective white glaze. Faint stylized tusks protrude from beneath the animal's jowls, and a lengthy erect crested mane runs from behind the head to near the mid-point of the back. Examples of boars like this are exceedingly rare as the ancient Chinese were more infatuated with depictions of animals corresponding with those twelve that comprise the zodiac. Hollow within the figure, this is a well-crafted demonstration of thousand-year-old terracotta artistry! Size: 4.875" L (12.4 cm).

- Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, with small chips to tail, crest, and feet. Light fading and discoloration to glazed surfaces, though nice craquelure lines are present. Heavy earthen deposits within the interior, with light earthen and mineral deposits on the exterior.
