Description:

Central Asia, Ordos Culture, modern day Mongolia / China, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A fabulous leaded bronze plaque in the form of an ibex with a slender torso and long snout crowned by petaloid ears and huge, sweeping horns that curve upward and end at the animal's posterior. The power and virility of the animal is emphasized in order to highlight that of its owner. Size: 1.8" W x 1.4" H (4.6 cm x 3.6 cm); 2.5" H (6.4 cm) on included custom stand.

The Ordos people were equestrian nomads who lived in the grassy, high steppes of the Ordos Plateau. Although today this area is a desert, when the Ordos people lived there, it was lush, and crosscut with many rivers. The Ordos culture is an interesting mix of Central Asian and Chinese, possibly the furthest east group of Scythians. They are famous for their beautiful bronzes, such as this example.
