Description:

East Asia, China, Shang Dynasty, ca. 1600 to 1050 BCE. This funerary item, known as a bi disc, is hand-carved from mottled nephrite jade and features a central hole. While bi discs are often simply polished circles, this rare example showcases notched edges that create a dynamic sense of movement. From the Neolithic period onward, bi discs were typically buried with the deceased, often broken or placed ceremonially on the body, usually near the stomach or chest, in high-status burials. Scholars also believe they served a ritual purpose during life. Size: 3.25" diameter (8.3 cm)
