Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu culture, ca. 14th to 15th century CE. A superb wooden rattle with a monkey finial, which may have been part of a ceremonial staff. The wood panel is slit from both sides and the interior panel carved out, pebbles were inserted inside and freely rattle within. The monkey sits atop eating fruit, his tail curled along the back panel, and the wide eyes may have been inlaid at one time. Size: 2.25" L x 1.5" W x 9.25" H (5.7 cm x 3.8 cm x 23.5 cm); 10" H (25.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
